Biography
Russell Ackoff is Anheuser Busch Professor Emeritus of Management Science in the Wharton School and Distinguished Affiliated Faculty, Organizational Dynamics, in the School of Arts and Sciences. Professor Ackoff has been described as a Renaissance Man, architect, city planner, philosopher, behavioral scientist, trailblazer in the field of organizational operations, the pre-eminent authority on organizational systems theory, best-selling author, world traveler—even a humorist.
Dr. Ackoff received his undergraduate degree in architecture and his Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his appointments at the Wharton School which began in 1964, he had held academic positions and visiting professorships from a dozen universities. He has written 23 books and more than 150 journal articles and monographs on topics such as psycholinguistics, measuring consumer interest, exploring personality, corporate planning, the art of problem solving, and leadership. His editorial board responsibilities have included Conflict Resolution, Philosophy of Science, Management Science, and Systems Research and Behavioral Science. Among his academic memberships, awards, fellowships, medals, and endowment fund, are 6 honorary doctorates in science and letters. In September 2000, he was honored at Penn by the establishment of the Ackoff Center for Advancement of Systems Approaches (ACASA). His research, consulting and education work has involved more than 350 corporations and 75 government agencies worldwide.
