Dr. Robert J. Marshak, Biographical Sketch

Robert J. Marshak is Senior Scholar in Residence at the AU/NTL MS in Organization Development Program at the School of Public Affairs, American University, Washington, D.C. He also leads a global consulting practice, specializing in organizational change and served almost 10 years in senior executive management and policy analysis positions in the U.S. government. He is widely recognized for his pioneering work on the role of metaphors, language, and symbolic meaning in organizational change, covert processes in organizational change, east Asian change philosophy, and as a thought leader in the field of organization development. Bob is the author of two books, Organizational Change: Views from the Edge (2009) and Covert Processes at Work: Managing the Five Hidden Dimensions of Organizational Change (2006) and more than 50 articles on organizational consulting and change published in leading academic and practitioner journals, including The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science; The Gestalt Review; Organization Development Journal; Human Relations; Academy of Management Review; Strategic Change; Organization; and Organizational Dynamics. His research on discourse and organization change was recognized by the U.S. Academy of Management with 2 Best Paper Awards ( 2004 and 2009). Bob received the Organization Development Network's Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of organization development as a consultant, educator, and author.
